Cariappa as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, succeeding General Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on January 15, 1949. The occasion is marked with parades and military displays in New Delhi and across all headquarters. In 2023, India celebrated the 75th Army Day in Bengaluru.
