Occurring on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu Lunar month of Ashadha (June-July), the term "guru," derived from Sanskrit, translates to "dispeller of darkness." The festival commemorates the initial transmission of yogic sciences from Shiva to his first disciples, the Saptarishis.
