By resolution A/RES/75/309, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 18th as the International Day on Countering Hate Speech. Hate speech not only contradicts the fundamental values of the Organization but also erodes the core principles and objectives outlined in the UN Charter, such as the promotion of human dignity, equality, and peace. The global escalation of hate speech poses a significant threat, with the potential to incite violence, disrupt social cohesion, diminish tolerance, and inflict psychological, emotional, and physical harm on its targets. Its impact extends beyond individuals and groups directly affected to impact societies at large.
While the destructive effects of hatred are not new, contemporary communication technologies have magnified its scale and influence. Hate speech has evolved into one of the prevailing methods for disseminating divisive rhetoric and ideologies on a global level. If left unaddressed, hate speech can jeopardize peace and development by setting the stage for conflicts, tensions, and widespread human rights violations.
