International Day of Rural Women

The International Day of Rural Women, designated by the United Nations, is commemorated annually on October 15th. This day serves to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of rural women to agriculture, food production, and rural development, while also emphasizing the importance of gender equality and empowerment of women in rural areas.

Comprising one-quarter of the global population, rural women play a significant role in agriculture, with one in three employed women worldwide working in this sector. Despite their crucial contributions, rural women often face disparities in power compared to men, resulting in lower income and heightened food insecurity. The establishment of the International Day of Rural Women was formalized by the General Assembly in its resolution 62/136 on December 18, 2007.
