International Merlot Day

Annually celebrated on November 7th, International Merlot Day pays homage to one of the world's most beloved red wines. It's also a day dedicated to encouraging those who have yet to experience merlot to give it a try.

The term "merlot" is believed to be derived from "merle," the French word for blackbird, likely referring to the grape's color. Merlot wine originated in Bordeaux, France, challenging the misconception that cabernet sauvignon is the most extensively planted grape in the region. In reality, Merlot occupies more hectares in Bordeaux than any other grape. In Italy, it ranks as the 5th most planted grape, and in Israel, it takes the second spot in terms of grape cultivation.
