Leif Erikson Day

Leif Erikson Day is an annual observance held on October 9th to honor Leif Erikson, the Norse explorer credited with leading the first Europeans to set foot on the North American continent around the year 1000 (excluding Greenland).

As the precise date of Leif's arrival in the Americas remains uncertain, October 9th was selected to commemorate the arrival of the Restauration in New York Harbor. This ship carried some of the initial Norwegian immigrants to the United States. Notably, Leif Erikson Day precedes Columbus Day, although it occasionally aligns with the U.S. observation of Columbus Day.
