World Press Freedom Day

On May 3, World Press Freedom Day, also known simply as World Press Day, is recognized by the United Nations General Assembly. This day serves to heighten awareness regarding the crucial role of press freedom and to prompt governments to uphold their responsibility in respecting and safeguarding the right to freedom of expression, as articulated in Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Additionally, it commemorates the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration—a set of principles on a free press formulated by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991.
